In the middle of the night, while waiting for a bus in a bus station, a lonely stranger called Mr. Smith sees a pregnant woman being chased by a man with a gun. He follows the couple, kills the man and helps the delivery of the baby in the middle of a shootout while a gang of hit-man tries to shoot them up. The woman is killed but Smith saves the baby, escaping from Hertz, the leader of the killers. Then he meets the prostitute Donna Quintano, who has just lost her baby, and asks her to breastfeed the newborn. They are chased by Hertz and Smith discovers the reason why the bad guy wants to kill the baby.
There are many impossible things in this movie, but the most impossible of all is the level of stupidity the American filmmakers and public have attained. It is just unbelievable! Truly, their evolution in that direction is amazingly rapid and, obviously, after a good history of attempts the point of absolute nonsense is a short way off. "Shoot'em up" is just the needed proof. Banality, emptiness and boredom are the words, I would use to describe the movie and the atmosphere it creates. If it is a parody, it is a parody only of itself. I wasted 90 valuable minutes of my life, watching and wondering who on earth has rated that movie so high! All the time I was awaiting some unexpected turn, word or whatever, able to justify the existence of such a garbage. Why? Because I just couldn't believe that the human stupidity can be so perfect. If you are striving for this kind of perfection- go on, watch "Shoot'em up" and rate it 10… And good luck!
How in the world can anyone take a film called "Shoot Em Up" seriously, for god's sake, its right there in the title, and that's exactly what it is. This is an action film for people who have watched thousands of action films. Not a single murder goes by where Clive Owen's character doesn't make a lame quip or joke, which thanks to his and the directors impeccable timing are hilarious. I watched this in theaters and laughed myself silly, and I rented it again with the same results. The plot, are a bunch of loosely connected political conspiracy ideas, which satirize the conventions of action films. The action film obsession with scantily clad women with large mammary glands comes to life with the lactating Italian prostitute(Monica Bellucci is almost always a prostitute). The action film cliché of "saving the children" is herea baby who only stops crying while listening to heavy metal(a better metaphor for action fans in general cinema has not seen). The silent tough guy, is Clive Owen who wears the traditional black trench coat, muscle gloves, ensemble which are pretty much standard issue for the 90's. The comical bad guy is Paul Giamatti (whose a pretty decent, if cartoonish, villain). Action films obsession with firearms and firepower, are here tomost of the conspiracy plot and that of the main character revolve around gun issues. None of these ideas are played out tastefully, after all this is an action movie, but the satire is there should the bullets stop for a few minutes giving you time to think. Clive Owen in the last two years has made two of the best action films in the past decade, one was the heart-stopping "Children of Men", the other which isover the topthe COM was realistic is "Shoot Em Up". It's notwonderfully stylized"Kill Bill", but it is a vastly entertaining, bullet a minute, very, very funny film. What point was there besides to satirize and pay homage to action films of the past, there was the point of the the carrotit was driven through the skull of first anonymous bad-guy killed in the film, to which Owen's character remarks "Eat Your Vegetables."
The whole thing feels like watching somebody else play a video game. Director Michael Davis obviously was more interested in crafting a series of gunfights than a coherent story arc.
